Initially when you start you may not be clear about the payment mode of the program. Most of the companies do not pay for driving traffic to their site. They will pay you commission only when a sale is made. Purchase of the product entirely depends on the wish of the customer so you may not get paid for a long time. For ‘pay-per-click’ or ‘pay-per-lead’ programs you may get paid more often but these payments are smaller than payment from commission. Getting a click to turn into actual buying needs lot of effort and time. At times the customer may not be satisfied with the product and asks for a refund. Your commission will get deducted in such cases. Moreover, if you have the misfortune of running advertisement for a company which fails to deliver, your income will also reduce.

2. Affiliate marketing is free to start

There are number of networks which will offer you free list. Then there are free web hosting companies and many other free services for you to start with your affiliate business. In reality if you use all these free services your site won’t look much impressive and your list may not be that great. Once you decide to do the business it is necessary to use all the strategies for selling like creating an attractive website, graphics, interesting content, etc. All this costs money. To run a successful business you need to invest in order to get returns. Unless you have a professional website which is different from others and is liked by the visitors there cannot be any sufficient gain.

3. Profit is quick and easy

You may offer number of incentives like limited time offer, free gifts, etc. These will work for a short period but you will not be able to make a customer base. The customers will obviously go where they can get lower price plus the incentives. Here the question is not instant profit but to build up a profitable business over the time. It takes more than ‘limited time offer’ to make up your reputation. You should employ smart marketing strategies.

6. Main aim is publicity- good or bad

This is absolutely not true. Bad publicity is bad for your business and your reputation. It does generate a lot of curiosity among the minds of the people. They may visit your site to see what it looks like. But when it comes to buying they will not take a risk of throwing away good money.
Bad publicity will give you bad reputation and do irreparable harm to your business.
