Blogs Versus Traditional Websites – Which Will You Opt For?
The last two decades of the twentieth century kept the cyber community captivated with some electrifying websites. Mind blowing graphics and animation along with a magical combination of other multimedia features was enough to keep a computer geek glued to his or her chair gaping at the seductive websites. The feature-enriched websites would carry information in an attractively organized amalgamation of textual and audio-visual content.
But as the cyber community evolved, the tastes of the members changed. People did not want to remain isolated. They did not want to visit websites just to gather information and remain passive receivers of whatever thrown on their faces. Human is a social animal and socialization is an inherent trait. Hence, the need to dynamically exchange information was felt.
Many Internet stalwarts introduced the chat feature where people would gather together and express their viewpoints. But there was a limitation to this in that chat sessions were meant for small time conversations and was usually on a one on one basis. So how can a person who wants to express himself or herself strongly convey his/her opinions? Hence, social networking or rather ‘blogging’ was conceptualized.
The need for socializing grew stronger by the day giving birth to some very popular social networking sites like MySpace and Facebook. Actively taking in the opinions of others and letting others know one’s opinion about all and sundry on this earth became an addictive habit and later progressed into a rage. Nowadays, blogging is the passion of not only the social freak but also the extremely busy corporate. There are personal as well as business blogs. As a result almost all traditional websites have a blogging corner these days.
One reason why people prefer to blog and not visit websites is that they can relate to it better than to a traditional website. Traditional websites are pretty formal and they give you standardized information about things or issues. Blogs, on the other hand, are personal (authentic at times) in nature. You come to know about the opinion of others. Many times, through blogs you get reliable information about any product that you think of purchasing.
Of course the difference between a blog and a traditional website is of a conceptual nature if you view it from the above perspective. You can also design a blog-styled website if you want to and make it very attractive, informal, and user friendly to attract network traffic.
But there are other differences technically that differentiate a blog from a traditional website. Since the content of blogs needs to be changed dynamically quite frequently, many of the blog construction applications come with integrated editing software or applications (WP, Joomal!, etc.) that will take care of all the editorial issues of the content introduced. This facility was not available with the traditional websites. Hence modifying the contents of traditional web pages was pretty cumbersome and restricted. Blogs are the favorites of search engines and are ranked high on the search engine optimized (SEO) listings than traditional websites. Organization of contents on blogs is much easier than in traditional websites as it allows for dynamic organization of the content for the designer as well others who have the right to modify the contents of your blog.
On the whole, traditional websites have given way to blogs, in the present times, which seem to remain in the internet scenario for some time to come.
